The Sugar Pine Trail crossed Fresno Street with an at-grade, mid-block crossing. Depending on the volume of traffic, navigating the intersection was challenging. In 2005, the City of Fresno enlisted the expertise of Blair, Church & Flynn to design an undercrossing. Because the site is very narrow, the trail alignment and retaining walls became critical design elements. Balancing access requirements, the cost of the walls and avoiding the existing 48” storm drain line were challenges the design team faced in both the planning and design phases of the project.
The project just finished construction by the City in late 2009.
