45-Inch Sewer Pipeline Rehabilitation at Marks Avenue

Project Summary

As a part of its ongoing effort to monitor its sanitary sewer system, the City of Fresno has identified a corrosion problem in a 45” diameter reinforced concrete pipe sewer. The corrosion is sulfide related, and remediation for the sewer is planned to be by the installation of a cured-in-place (CIPP) pipe liner. The sewer crosses the large Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Railway Yard (containing sixteen parallel railroad tracks) and the State Route 99 freeway.

Blair, Church & Flynn prepared the plans and specifications for the project. The project included discussions with both UPRR and Caltrans regarding options to cross their rights-of-way, including excavation within the UPRR right-of-way, the installation of a steel casing across both the UPRR and Caltrans rights-of-way, and the routing of wastewater bypass piping across a Caltrans bridge. Ultimately, applications were prepared and permits were received from both UPRR and Caltrans for the project. The project is currently out to bid with an estimated construction cost of approximately $2 million.
