Blair, Church & Flynn was a part of the architectural design team responsible for Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s (PG&E) service center renovation and modernization in Fresno, California. This center serves as a main regional hub for PG&E’s field crews and service personnel. Our project responsibilities included surveying, design of off-site roadways, traffic signals and railroad crossing improvements, pavement and structural slab design, site planning, grading and drainage design, sewer, water and fire protection design, and design of landscape and irrigation improvements.
Because the project was a redevelopment of PG&E’s existing service center, which had been in use since the early 1900’s, there were many unique challenges, ranging from environmental remediation and containment of hazardous materials, to mapping of unknown underground utilities, to planning for phased demolition and construction to provide for on-going site operations during the construction process. We also contributed to ongoing value engineering efforts with the contractor, design team, and representatives of PG&E’s administration and many independent divisions.
