Located in the rugged Sierra National Forest at elevation 8,900 feet, Florence Lake is one of several high-country reservoirs for Southern California Edison’s massive hydroelectric power system in the western Sierra Nevada. Built in the 1930’s, the Florence Lake Dam utilized a multiple arch design. Since then however, much damage had been done to the dam’s surface due to freezing and thawing conditions.
Blair, Church & Flynn was tasked to design a repair solution for the concrete abutments used as main supporting columns of the dam. A special freeze/thaw concrete mix was designed and prepared using silica flume. This new material was transported to the remote location and mixed on site.
