Developed in 2003, the Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in Clovis, California needed its primary east – west access road to cross the Clovis Old Town Trail; a popular and heavily used community pedestrian and bike path. For Lowe’s, the need to cross the trail was vital in order to optimize access to the site. The City of Clovis was concerned about the potential for vehicle / pedestrian conflict common with mid-block at-grade crossings.
Following the successful design and construction of the four previous City of Clovis pedestrian undercrossings, Blair, Church & Flynn was hired by the developer to engineer two similar solutions adjacent to the new shopping center. The Lowe’s pedestrian undercrossings project required integrating the earthwork, grading and drainage requirements of the undercrossing into an approved site plan; utility relocation coordination; and design for off site improvements, pre-cast concrete undercrossings, retaining walls and slope stabilization, lighting and security infrastructure, storm drainage infrastructure and comprehensive landscape and irrigation.
