Project Summary

A joint venture between the Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District and the Fresno Irrigation District, the Fancher Creek Detention Basin Headwork structures are the largest of their kind within either agency’s system and important tools that are used to protect the Fresno-Clovis metropolitan area from flooding disasters.

From conceptual design through daily construction management, Blair, Church & Flynn’s engineers were involved in every aspect of the project; maintaining a continual focus on optimum flood control operability and day-to-day facility management. Two reinforced concrete water control structures located at the headworks of Fancher Creek and Mill Ditch replaced dilapidated structures responsible for diverting nearly 2,000 cubic feet per second. The new facilities include four overshot gates and five undershot gates, allowing for accurate water measurement and full automated control. Construction required a temporary bypass facility that was capable of conveying a flow of 950 cubic feet per second. Made up of over 2,500 cubic yards of reinforced concrete, the new structures strike a balance between flood water diversion and irrigation water delivery.
